William Scott, a member of the Scotts of Harden, was sentenced to death for attempting to steal cattle from the Murrays of Elibank. Lady Murray, however, offered him a choice: death or marriage to her unmarried daughter, Agnes, known as Muckle Mouth for her ugliness. This marriage, it is said, brought about the unification of two feuding families, a remarkable outcome for a story that began with a criminal sentence.
